Objectives

·         Explore Packet Tracer as a Prototyping Tool

 

Background / Scenario

In this activity, you will have a chance to explore a Packet Tracer based IoT system prototype designed to allow a user to remotely check whether the garage door is open. You are encouraged to freely explore the prototype to gain a better understanding of the technologies used in the system.

 

Required Resources

·         PC with Packet Tracer 7.1 or newer installed

 

Part 1: The Topology

 

Step 1: The Network

The network topology is designed to simulate a home which is connected to the Internet via a DSL-based Internet Service Provider (ISP). A wireless router provides wireless access to all the home devices (desktop computers, laptops, smartphones, etc).

The wireless router is also connected to the WAN via a DSL modem which in turn connects to the Internet. Note that the DSL modem is provided by the ISP.

The SBC device represents a Raspberry Pi computer and is connected to the Garage Door. Since the garage door has no intelligence or Internet connectivity of its own, the SBC is used to fill that gap. Similar to the other devices in the home, the SBC connects to the home wireless via the home wireless network.

The Home PC and Home Laptop were added to represent other home devices which are connected. Any of these devices can also be used to access the system.

The Public WiFi Router is added to represent free Internet connections through the city. Think of it as wireless hot spots present in libraries, coffee shops, workplaces, and more. The key here is that the user will also have a connection to the Internet.

The Smartphone represents the user when he or she is away from the home. In this scenario, Internet access would be achieved through that Smartphone. Notice that the user could also connect to the system from any other device, as long it was connected to the Internet.

Note: Python used in PT is an open source Python to JavaScript interpreter that is not updating to Python 3.0. For this reason there may be slight differences in the syntax between the code observed in PT and that in devices using Python 3.

a. Click the SBC.

b. Click the Programming Tab. On the left pane that opens, a file name is displayed, main.py, in this case. This is the program that will be running in the SBC on behalf of the Garage Door.

c. Packet Tracer displays the actual code stored in main.py on the right area of the window. This is an important window because you can edit, stop and start the program.

d. Click the Run button to execute the program. What happens?

The program shows information about the status of the garage door

e.       This code, written in Python, is responsible for periodically transmitting the status of the garage door to a server on the Internet. If the door is shut, the code sends out 0. If the door is open, 1 is sent to the Internet server.

Looking at the code, answer the following questions:

How often are door status updates sent to the Internet server?

Part 2: Using the System

To use the system, consider the following use case scenario: The user leaves the house and stops by a coffee stop on his or her way to work. During the stop, the user wonders if the garage door was shut or not. 

Because the system is already in place, the user can quickly access the Internet server address from his or her phone web browser to check the door status.

Step 1: Opening the Status Page From the Smartphone

a.     Click the Smartphone and select the Desktop tab in the window that opens.

b.     Navigate to Desktop > Web Browser.

c.     In the URL address bar, type in www.connthings.example. This is the IP address of the Internet server used to collect the data sent by the SBC.

d.     The page that opens in the Smartphone should display a green bar, communicating the garage door is shut.

e.     With the status page still open on the Smartphone, open the garage door by holding down the ALT key and clicking the door. The door should open. 

What is displayed in the Smartphone?

The garage door is open

The SBC which connected to the door updates the server which in turn, updates a local file with the status of the door. When a user connects to the server via a web browser, the server presents a web page built based on the door status stored in the disk. 

Based on what you have learned in this course, what would be the role of the Internet server used in this Packet Tracer Prototype?

The Internet server allows the smartphone (which is from an external network) to wirelesslyoperate the entire system within the internal network, specifically the garage door in this case.

 

a.     The system is designed to allow any device that is connected to the Internet to use it. Try opening the door status page from the Home PC and from the Home Laptop.

What is the benefit of accessing the system from within the house?

Accessing the system from within the house will be able to process the SBC faster than what it would be from a larger distance, and through the internet, as all the devices that have access will be within the same network.

Part 3: Challenge Questions

a.     Expand the Internet Cloud and explore its contents. Try locating the DNS server and the web server that receive the updates from the SBC.

b.     Locate the Multilayer Switch. What is its function in this prototype?

A multilayer switch provides traffic transport, integrated security monitoring and performs the functions of a switch at a much faster rate.

c.     Add more devices to the Home Network and try to access the system from them.

d.     The system currently doesn’t store garage door status but it could be a good future feature. Can you think of one benefit of storing the door status over time?

It is a good security measure as you can determine if somebody opened your garage without your consent.

e.     Can you describe, as an overview, what changes would have to happen for the current system to track the status?

f. What crucial IoT feature is missing in this prototype?

Security from within and outside the network to view and manipulate devices within the network

Part 4: Reflection

The system prototyped here is simply a proof of concept but can be used to present and even refine some aspects of a project. By nature, Packet Tracer prototypes are very inexpensive as it allows for testing projects that require complex network topologies. Also, Packet Tracer’s Python support makes it easy to improve and eventually port any code to the actual devices when the testing phase is complete.

Bunian suku kaum yang tersembunyi.

Lutfi yang berumur 6 tahun dipanggil oleh seorang wanita di dapur untuk makan. "Lutfi, makan banyak-banyak, biar cepat besar." Kata wanita itu. Lutfi makan dengan penuh selera. Wanita itu bangun dan masuk ke dalam biliknya.

Selesai makan, dia bangun berjalan di persekitaran rumah itu. Sebuah rumah papan yang agak usang. Dia cuba mengendap di balik pintu di sebuah bilik, wanita itu sedang menari.

Wanita itu menari mengikut rentak lagu. Tarian wanita itu agak pelik dan menyeramkan. Lutfi berjalan perlahan-lahan hendak keluar dari rumah itu.

Belum sempat keluar dari pintu utama rumah. Bahunya di sentuh. Langkahnya terhenti. "Lutfi, nak pergi mana?" Suara wanita itu seperti membisik yang agak menyeramkan.

Lutfi menoleh ke belakang, dia menjerit ketakutan. Wajah wanita itu bertukar menjadi sangat hodoh. Wanita itu tersenyum. "Aku lapar." Kata wanita itu.

Lutfi terjaga dari tidur. Semua yang berlaku tadi hanya mimpi. Dia lihat isterinya sedang tidur di sebelahnya. Jam menunjukkan pukul 4 pagi.

"Abang, mimpi ngeri lagi ke?" Soal isterinya yang juga terjaga dari tidur. "Aah, mimpi yang sama. takpelah, tidur balik." Kata Lutfi tidak mahu memanjangkan cerita. Pagi itu, Semasa Lutfi bersiap hendak pergi ke pejabat. Dia terperasan ada lebam di tangannya.

Isterinya muncul. "Bang, saya dah siapkan sarapan, abang makan lah. Saya nak hantar anak-anak pergi sekolah." "Baik hati-hati" Kata lutfi sedang mengemaskan tienya.

Lutfi seorang yang bekerjaya. Dalam usia yang muda, dia sudah mempunyai syarikatnya sendiri dan mempunyai keluarga yang bahagia. Tapi dalam hidupnya, dia sering diganggu mimpi buruk yang banyak menimbulkan tanda tanya.

Di dalam mimpi itu, dia masih kecil. Di dalam sebuah kampung, dia tinggal di dalam sebuah rumah papan. Dia dapat rasa kan seperti dia berasal dari kampung itu. Lokasinya tidak diketahui.

"Aku rasa kau kena jumpa pakar psikiatri la, hampir setiap malam, kau mimpi benda sama." Kata Nan, rakan sekerja Lutfi.

"Kalau aku jumpa pakar psikiatri, mesti dia cakap mimpi tu mainan tidur la." Kata lutfi sambil meneguk air di dalam botol air mineral di tangannya. "Kau pernah pergi ke kampung tu?"

"Tak pernah, tapi tak tahu kenapa, aku rasa macam aku nak pergi sana dan firasat aku rasa macam aku pernah tinggal kat situ." Jelas Lutfi. "Fi, cuba kau tanya ayah kau, aku rasa mesti dia tahu kalau mungkin kau pernah pergi ke kampung tu masa kau kecil." Cadangan Nan.

Balik sahaja dari kerja, Lutfi memandu kereta ke rumah ayahnya. Maknya meninggal dunia, semasa dia berumur satu tahun. "Eh Lutfi, kenapa kau tiba-tiba datang sini, ada apa-apa ke?" Soal ayahnya yang sedang membaca surat khabar.

Lutfi memberitahu ayahnya tentang mimpi buruk yang dialaminya. Riak muka ayahnya menjadi pucat. "Lutfi, ayah pesan kau jangan ikutkan perasaan. Jangan ikut apa yang ada dalam mimpi tu." Kata ayahnya dengan nada ketakutan. "Kenapa ayah?"

"Apa yang kau mimpi tu kampung bunian." Lutfi terkejut. "Kampung bunian! Kenapa lutfi mimpi kampung tu?" "Dulu masa kau berumur 5 tahun, kau pernah hilang masa kita sekeluarga berkelah. Selepas sebulan baru kau ditemui. Kau hilang ingatan dan kami syak kau disembunyikan bunian."

"Kenapa Lutfi mimpi kampung tu setiap malam?" "Mungkin mereka cuba ingin memperdayakan kau, supaya kau kembali ke alam bunian." Jelas ayahnya. Lutfi mula paham dan pulang ke rumahnya.

Semasa di dalam rumah, dia lihat di surat khabar ada iklan trip pendakian di gunung Jelutung. Apabila membaca nama gunung itu, hatinya mula merasakan yang kampung itu ada di kawasan gunung itu. Tapi dia teringat pesanan ayahnya. "Ah lupakan lah."

Seminggu berlalu, hampir setiap malam Lutfi masih mimpi buruk. "Aku dah tak tahan, aku kena pergi ke gunung itu juga." Kata Lutfi merungut di dalam hati. Dia mendaftar untuk menyertai ekspedisi pendakian gunung Jelutung pada minggu hadapan.

Hari pendakian tiba. "Abang, janganlah pergi, saya risau la." "Abang janji, lepas semua ni selesai, abang akan balik." Kata Lutfi memegang tangan isterinya.

Ekspedisi pendakian gunung Jelutung bermula. Semuanya berjalan dengan lancar. Seramai 20 orang menyertai ekspedisi itu.

Setelah beberapa jam mendaki, mereka berkhemah di sebuah kem. Mereka berkhemah dalam open tent yang hanya ada bumbung tapi tiada pintu dan dinding. Kalau baring, memang akan nampak jelas persekitaran luar.

Jam menunjukkan pukul 1 pagi. Lutfi terjaga dari tidurnya kerana terdengar bunyi siulan. "Siapa yang bersiul, malam-malam dalam hutan tebal ni?" Soal Lutfi di dalam hati. Lutfi menoleh di persekitaran di sebelah kiri.

Lutfi terkejut, ada seorang lelaki tua berserban putih dan berjubah putih tengah tersenyum ke arahnya. Lelaki tua itu mula berpaling dan berjalan perlahan-lahan masuk ke dalam hutan yang tebal.

Lutfi mula teringat tujuannya datang ke gunung itu. Mungkin lelaki tua itu ada jawapan yang dia cari selama ini. Dia mula bangun dan berjalan ke arah tempat lelaki tua itu berjalan tadi.

Lutfi lihat lelaki tua itu berjalan di hadapannya. Dia mula berlari untuk mendapatkan lelaki tua itu. Tapi dia masih tidak dapat mendekati lelaki tua itu, sedangkan lelaki tua itu hanya berjalan.

Tiba-tiba langkahnya terhenti kerana terdengar suara memangilnya dari arah belakang. Lutfi menoleh ke belakang. Kelihatan seorang nenek tua berambut putih, memakai tongkat dan memakai baju hitam sedang tersenyum ke arahnya.

Dalam keadaan gelap gelita, "Nenek nak apa?" "Nenek sesat, boleh kamu pimpin tangan nenek, nenek takut hilang arah."

Lutfi mula rasa seram, dia tidak berani tapi dia juga tidak sanggup meninggalkan nenek tua itu berjalan seorang diri di dalam hutan yang tebal. Tanpa berfikir panjang, dia memimpin tangan nenek tua itu. Mereka berjalan perlahan-lahan ke arah hadapan.

"Apa nenek buat kat dalam hutan ni malam-malam?" "Nenek cari suami nenek." Jelas nenek tua itu. Lutfi mula teringat tentang lelaki tua tadi. Mungkin itu ialah suaminya.

"Saya ada nampak lelaki tua berjubah putih tadi, itu ke suami nenek?" Soal Lutfi ingin tahu. "Hehehe." Nenek itu tidak menjawab tapi ketawa dengan nada yang menyeramkan.

Lutfi mula rasa seram dan bulu romanya mula naik apabila dia sedar tangan nenek tua itu sangat sejuk seperti mayat.

"Sampai dah rumah nenek." Kata nenek tua itu. Dalam keadaan gelap, Lutfi mula pelik. "Mana ada rumah kat sini?" Soal Lutfi

"Hehe, yang kau pijak tu." Lutfi pandang ke bawah, dia sedang berdiri di atas kubur. Sambil tangan masih memimpin tangan nenek tua itu, Lutfi melihat persekitarannya. Dia berada di tanah perkuburan.

Dengan perlahan, dia memandang ke arah nenek tua itu. Wajahnya sudah bertukar menjadi sangat hodoh. Dalam keadaan ketakutan, dia melepaskan tangan nenek tua itu dan mula berlari.

Semasa berlari, Lutfi dapat dengar suara nenek tua itu ketawa. Akhirnya dia terjatuh kerana terlanggar tunggul kayu. Jatuh sahaja, kedengaran suara seorang perempuan menangis.

Tiba-tiba suara itu mula menyanyi sambil menangis dengan nada yang agak menyeramkan. Lagu yang dinyanyikan perempuan itu seperti pernah didengari oleh Lutfi. Dia cuba menghayati lirik lagu itu.

"Ulek mayang ku ulek Ulek dengan jala jemala Ulek mayang diulek Ulek dengan tuannya puteri Ulek mayang diulek Ulek dengan jala jemala Ulek mayang diulek Ulek dengan puterinya dua"

Bulu roma Lutfi mula naik, dia pandang ke arah belakang. Perempuan itu rupanya ada di belakangnya. Memakai baju kebaya merah dengan wajah yang sangat menakutkan sedang menari sambil menyanyi dengan kukunya yang tajam.

Lutfi hanya tergamam melihat tarian dan nyanyiannya. Tiba-tiba perempuan itu berhenti menari dan menyanyi. Kepalanya berpaling memandang ke arah Lutfi. Apabila perempuan itu sedar yang lutfi melihatnya, dia tersenyum.

Perempuan itu lalu berlari laju ke arah Lutfi. Lutfi terkejut dengan pantas mula bangun dan berlari. Dari arah belakang, Lutfi dapat dengar suara perempuan itu. "Nak lari mana tu?!!!!!!"

Dari jauh, Lutfi dapat lihat lelaki tua itu sedang berjalan di hadapannya. Sama seperti tadi, Lutfi masih tidak dapat mendekati lelaki tua itu. Tapi dia tidak putus asa, dia masih berlari.

Lutfi dapat rasa kan yang lelaki tua itu mungkin jawapan bagi persoalan yang timbul di balik mimpi buruk yang dilaluinya selama ini.

Semakin lama berlari, Lutfi dapat rasa kan yang dia seperti dikejar dari arah belakang. Bukan seorang tapi ramai. Dia tidak berani menoleh ke belakang.

Lelaki tua di hadapannya itu berjalan masuk ke dalam sebuah gua yang ada cahaya yang sangat terang di dalam gua itu. Lutfi tanpa berfikir panjang mengikuti langkah lelaki tua itu untuk masuk ke dalam gua itu.

Selepas Lutfi masuk ke dalam gua itu, dia terkejut yang tiada di dalam gua. Tapi dia berada di sebuah kampung, kampung yang selalu muncul di dalam mimpinya. Dia mula berjalan perlahan-lahan ke hadapan.

Akhirnya dia jumpa rumah yang selalu dia mimpi. Dia menolak pintu utama rumah itu. Kelihatan seorang wanita yang terkejut melihat dirinya. Mata wanita itu mula berair. Dia berlari memeluk Lutfi.

"Mana Lutfi hilang selama ni?" Kata wanita itu. Lutfi dapat lihat ada cermin di dalam rumah itu. Dia masih seorang budak yang berumur 6 tahun.

Sebenarnya selama ini, Lutfi sesat di alam bunian. Di alam bunian, dia diberi kejayaan dan keluarga yang bahagia sehingga dia lupa akan dunia yang sebenar. Tubuh badannya mempunyai kesan lebam kerana darahnya sering di ambil.

Alam bunian memerlukan darah manusia untuk mengekalkan eko sistem mereka. Oleh sebab itu, mereka akan memerangkap manusia untuk terus tinggal di alam bunian.

Mimpi buruk yang Lutfi selalu dapat semasa di alam bunian ialah berkat dari usaha doa ibu bapanya. Supaya Lutfi dapat petunjuk tentang dunianya yang sebenar.

Lelaki tua berbaju putih itu ialah petunjuk bagi manusia yang tersesat di alam bunian untuk pulang ke dunia sebenar. Manakala nenek tua dan perempuan berbaju merah itu ialah penghalang supaya manusia terus sesat.

Bertahun di sana tapi hanya sebentar sahaja masa di dunia sebenar, Lutfi baru hilang selama 3 bulan tapi di alam bunian dia sudah hidup selama 21 tahun. Tamat
